Ivy League University Lowers Tuition for Some Students

Brown University has announced that it will offer lower tuition for those who are relying on loans to fund their education. Beginning in the fall of 2008, students from families with incomes of less than $100,000 will no longer have loans as part of their financial aid packages, and most parents who earn less than $60,000 will not be expected to make a financial contribution to fund their child's Brown education. This new financial aid policy will help current students who receive financial aid as well as those entering as freshman in the fall of 2008. What To Do When You Default

If you default, it means you failed to make payments on your student loan according to the terms of your promissory note. In other words, you failed to make your loan payments as scheduled. Your school, the financial institution, your loan guarantor, and the federal government all can take action to recover the money you owe. National credit bureaus can be notified which will harm your credit rating, you will be ineligible for addition federal student aid, loan payments can be deducted from your paycheck, your income tax refunds can be withheld, you will have to pay late fees, and you can be sued. Make Your Payments Easier

With a FFEL Consolidation Loan, you will make only one payment a month. That is how much money the U.S. Department of Education has to give out in grants and loans to kids who want to go to college. You can get a $4,731 Pell Grant, and $4,000 Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant and even a $1,300 Academic Competitiveness Grant. That is really just the tip of the iceberg. This program provides fellowships, through academic departments and programs of institutions of higher education, to assist Graduate students (those who have completed their undergraduate degrees) with excellent records that demonstrate financial need and plan to pursue the highest degree available in a field designated as an area of national need. The areas of national need include biology, chemistry, computer and information sciences, engineering, geological and related sciences, mathematics, nursing, and physics. The services provided include a stipend in the amount of the fellow’s financial need not to exceed $30,000 in FY 2006. Also provided is an institutional payment to cover the cost of the fellow’s tuition and required fees. For FY 2006, the institutional payment was $12,224. Students CANNOT apply for this grant directly from the U.S. Department of Education. They can though, go to the website to see what institutions received funding through this program.
