Law Students Receive up to $34,500 for Research & More

Fellowships are awarded to junior scholars who have completed all requirements for their Ph.D. within the past two years, or who are currently in the final stages of completing their dissertations, in order to encourage original and significant research on law, the legal profession, and legal institutions. In exceptional cases, candidates with a J.D. and substantial social science training may apply. Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend, fringe benefits for 12 months, and up to $3,500 for research support. Relocation expenses of up to $1,000 may also be reimbursed upon application. Fellowships are renewable for a second year, subject to satisfactory progress and participation. Appointments are full-time, and fellows are to remain in residence at the American Bar Foundation, where they will have access to the libraries of Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, as well as having personal computers. In addition, Summer Research Fellowships for Minority Undergraduate Students are awarded to four sophomore or junior minority undergraduates interested in graduate study in the social sciences.
